ABOUT ME
GYSEL FERNANDINI

I was born in 1972 and grew up in Lima, Peru. Since I was a child, I would accompany my mother, an interior decorator, to her workshop, supplier warehouses and work locations, where my brother and I would wait for her, playing with the materials, such as stones and wood, that we found in each place. I grew up surrounded by plans and scraps of finishes from colonial houses that my mother collected to later transform into furniture for our home. So, even before I finished high school, I knew I wanted to be an architect. I lived in that house from age 13 until I got married and I moved to work in Miami..

I have a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Urbanism from Universidad Ricardo Palma (1995). Professionally, I have more than 20 years of experience as an architect and interior designer in my own studio, having worked in Lima and Miami, where I lived for two years when I got married.

In 2016, I discovered the world of photography and began taking intensive continuing education courses, both from a technical and artistic perspective. My architect's eye was reactivated through the photographic lens, and it continued to explore light in search of angles, volumes, depths and perspectives. In my artistic process, I combine architectural photography with the diorama collage technique to create "photo-sculptures." In my work, I explore the intersection between two-dimensional photography and three-dimensionality, creating compositions that invite the viewer to explore new perspectives of the image. My works not only celebrate architecture as a central theme but also play with volume, texture, colour and shape, creating a rich and evocative visual experience. Most of my pieces are made manually; after printing the images on cotton paper, acrylic or aluminum supports, I create them through processes of measurement, cutting, folding, gluing and restructuring. Each stage is an expression of craftsmanship and spontaneous creativity that is reflected in each unique piece I produce, maintaining each of its own character and personality, thus capturing the essence of my fluid and dynamic creative process.

Today I can say that I inherited from my mother the practice of collage as a working methodology and the art of reinventing old objects or those designed for a specific use, giving them a new life. This is something that I also apply in my photographs when exploring new angles and materials. I like to refer to my works as "Scraps of Memory" since, through photographic fragments, I bring us closer to those places that we value from a lived experience. They are memories that fade over time until they become abstract, resulting in fractions of a present to which each person attributes a particular meaning.
